Coming in the form of a phone call from Wells Fargo.  Hackers spoof their phone to make it look like the phone call is coming from the number on the back of your bank card.

They say that there was a fraudulent charge on your account in another state, have you been on vacation lately?

You haven’t.

They say that they are going to get this fixed for you.  Do you have the card handy?

You do.  They ask you to verify the CVV code on the back, you do.

Then they say they are going to send out a new card to you and read you a bunch of the bank jargon that sounds very official.

They ask you to pick a new pin and then verify it.

After that, they ask you to enter the old pin.

If you enter your ‘old’ pin, they have all the information that is needed in order to drain your bank account!

Hackers may even give you the last four of your social to put your mind at ease that they really are the bank.  With all of the breaches lately, it’s no surprise that hackers have your personal information.

What do you do?

  1. Hang up and call the number on the back of your bank card to see if there was a fraudulent charge.
  2. Don’t enter your personal information over the phone.
  3. Take your time and think through the action that they are asking. Many of our impulsive decisions are not always the best ones.
